Purpose: Use anatomy & physiology to make safe service decisions; explain the why using correct terms (Obj. 1, 3–16).
Time: 30–40 minutes
Materials:
- Your device (phone/tablet/computer)
- Timer (phone)
- This scenario set and response log (copy/paste template below)
How it works:
- Set a 3-minute timer per case.
- Read the case. Choose Go, Modify, or Refer.
- In 2–3 sentences, justify your choice using system vocabulary (e.g., integumentary barrier, ulnar nerve, veins are superficial on dorsum, warm-not-hot for endocrine/neuropathy, short filing passes to avoid friction heat, insertion→origin strokes, respiration comfort).
- Move to the next case until all are complete.
Cases (10 total):
- Tingling on the little-finger side during shaping.
- Top of foot is tender; client reports “tight shoes today.”
- Client with diabetes unsure about water temperature for the soak.
- Visible cracks in cuticle area with redness; no open drainage.
- Client reports “cold feet” and ankle swelling at day’s end.
- Client requests very hot towel wraps “to melt stress.”
- Client gets dizzy when fully reclined; prefers more upright.
- Client mentions pregnancy and heat sensitivity.
- Client reports numb toe after tight sandals; skin intact.
- Client felt burning during a previous salon’s e-file service.
Decision key (for self-check after submission):
- 1 Modify (ulnar nerve; lighten pressure; short, cool filing passes; neutral wrist)
- 2 Modify (dorsal foot = veins superficial; broad, light strokes; avoid deep compression)
- 3 Modify (endocrine/neuropathy risk; warm-not-hot; verbal temp checks)
- 4 Modify (protect integumentary barrier; conservative cuticle care; monitor; if worsening → Refer)
- 5 Modify (circulatory/lymph; gentle rhythm; slight elevation; no deep compression)
- 6 Modify (thermoregulation; warm, not hot; respiration comfort)
- 7 Modify (respiratory; semi-upright; ensure fresh air; check comfort)
- 8 Modify (endocrine/reproductive; extra bolstering; warm-not-hot)
- 9 Modify (possible superficial nerve sensitivity/peroneal branches; gentle positioning; reassess)
- 10 Refer if active pain/heat sensitivity persists; otherwise Modify future technique (short, cool passes; watch nail bed—senses pressure, not heat)

Grading rubric (100 pts):
- Correct decision (Go/Modify/Refer) – 25 pts
- Accurate A&P justification (system/tissue/nerve/vessel/thermoregulation terms) – 50 pts
- Clear technique change(s) (pressure, temperature, position, filing passes) – 25 pts
